The sanctions are the main obstacle to purchasing medicines and equipment to fight the new coronavirus epidemic, said Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.
“COVID-19 revealed the serious restrictions imposed on Cuba by the US economic blockade. It is a major obstacle to the acquisition of medicines, equipment, and supplies needed to fight the pandemic. This is the main obstacle to the country’s development,” Rodriguez wrote on Twitter.
Earlier, the President of the UN General Assembly, Tijani Muhammad-Bande called for the need to lift sanctions, which in the context of the coronavirus pandemic further complicate the situation of the most vulnerable countries in terms of the spread of the disease.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also called on the G20 leaders to lift sanctions that prevent the spread of coronavirus from delivering food, medical care, and necessities. Then the permanent missions of Russia, China, Iran, Syria, North Korea, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela to the UN sent a letter to Guterres asking him to demand the complete and immediate lifting of unilateral sanctions that prevent countries from fighting the COVID-19 coronavirus.
