The EU has officially notified the UK of “Brexit” violations

The European Union is starting proceedings with the UK over the internal market bill, whose provisions contradict the “Brexit” agreement. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said in a video message.

Earlier, the European Union asked the country to eliminate the provisions of the bill by the end of September, which run counter to the Treaty on the Kingdom’s withdrawal from the Union. This agreement was negotiated with considerable difficulties and many months late, and then ratified by both parties and entered into force in February of this year. This allowed the UK to leave the EU without severe shocks while maintaining a transition period in relation to it.

“The deadline passed yesterday, and problematic provisions were not removed. Therefore, in the morning, the EC decided to send a letter of official notification to the government of the United Kingdom. This is the first step in the violation (by a country of the agreement with the EU). The Letter asks the government to send its views within a month,” the head of the EC said.

The UK government in September introduced a bill that, according to many EU representatives, contradicts not only the agreement on the terms of the UK’s exit from the EU but also – in some points (the British government itself recognized this) – international law.

The European Union is studying all options for responding to the possible failure of the UK to comply with the “divorce” agreement, European Commission Vice-President Maros Sefcovic said in late September.
