On Thursday, former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick officially announced that he was entering the 2020 presidential race, forcing even more room for numerous contenders for the Democratic nomination.
Patrick, one of the first African-American governors in the United States, announced his candidacy for the presidency in a short video posted on his website.
The entry into the race of Patrick, who became the 18th contender for the Democratic nomination, may increase the anxiety of party centrists, who already fear that the left-wing political programs of candidates Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders weaken the chances of Democrats to win the 2020 election of the incumbent President Donald Trump.
In December 2018, Patrick refused to participate in the race, but later reportedly regretted his decision.
Deval Patrick was Governor of Massachusetts from January 2007 to January 2015.
