The German government calls on the U.S. Congress not to impose sanctions against “Nord Stream-2” due to the fact that restrictions may weaken confidence in the United States. This is stated in a classified document that the German Embassy in Washington sent to lawmakers. On Sunday, it was published by the Axios portal.

The document states that Berlin is “determined to successfully implement” the bilateral agreements reached earlier on July 21 in order to “strengthen the energy security of Ukraine and Europe, as well as to deter Russia from abusing the pipeline for aggressive political purposes.” According to the German side, “U.S. sanctions against “Nord Stream-2″ will undermine the commitments given to Germany in the joint statement [dated July 21], weaken confidence in the U.S. government and jeopardize the achievements of the joint statement, including provisions on support for Ukraine.”
