Earlier, the governor of Michigan called on federal authorities to change the distribution scheme of vaccines to help the state fight against the epidemic.
The White House COVID-19 Response Team said the expansion of vaccination is not a response to the spike in Michigan cases.
The announcement comes a day after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appeared on Sunday’s “Face the Country” news program and called on the White House to change its vaccine distribution plan, which is now based on population, to help the state reduce the number of new infections.
The spread of COVID-19 in Michigan is among the highest in the United States, and many hospitalizations lead to overloads in the health care system.
However, speaking at a regular briefing on COVID-19 at the White House, the director of the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Rochelle Walensky, said that the best way to respond to the situation in Michigan is to “close down,” as happened in many US states a year ago.
