The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, during a meeting with the head of the Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Seiko Hashimoto, said that Japan was able to make the most prepared city for the Olympics in the history of the Games.
“You managed to make Tokyo the most prepared city for the Olympic Games in the history of competitions. This fact is the most significant in the current difficult conditions,” he stressed.
At the same time, Bach noted that it will be possible to say that the task of the organizers and the IOC is fully fulfilled “when the athletes leave Tokyo.”
The Olympic Games in Tokyo were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus and will be held from July 23 to August 8. It should become the largest in terms of the number of sports – 33, and categories – 339. It is planned to participate about 19 thousand athletes, and the number of accompanying persons will be reduced to 41 thousand. At the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including volunteers, 300 thousand personnel will be involved (190 thousand at the Olympics and 110 thousand at the Paralympics).
In the spring of this year, it was decided that the Olympics would be held without foreign fans. Initially, the Japanese authorities hoped to hold the Games with a limited number of local spectators, but against the background of an increase in the growth rate of new coronavirus infections and the introduction of the fourth emergency regime in Tokyo until August 22, it was decided that only 26 competitions of this year’s Summer Olympic Games would be held with spectators.
