Humanity has every chance to defeat the coronavirus pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, is sure.
“The pandemic will end when the world decides to end it. It is in our hands,” AFP quotes the head of the WHO.
Ghebreyesus said that humanity has all the means to defeat the virus.
“However, the world has not used these tools well,” he added.
The official recalled the WHO’s goal — to immunize at least 40 percent of the population of each country by the end of this year. Ghebreyesus stressed that it could be achieved only if the statements of the countries and companies controlling the supply of the vaccine coincide with their actions.
The head of the organization called on the countries that have reached this indicator to supply drugs as a priority within the framework of the international COVAX mechanism.
Among other things, Ghebreyesus noted that he considers it necessary to suspend the intellectual property rights to vaccines to put an end to the pandemic.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 242 million cases of coronavirus infection have been recorded worldwide. More than 4.9 million people have become victims of the disease caused by infection. The situation is most difficult in the USA, India, and Brazil.
