The head of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) called an urgent meeting of 36 representatives on May 27 in connection with the incident with the Ryanair plane in Minsk.
“The President of the ICAO Council has called an urgent meeting of 36 diplomatic representatives in the ICAO Council on May 27 regarding the incident involving Ryanair flight FR4978 in the airspace of Belarus on May 23, 2021,” the organization said on Twitter. The Ryanair plane, flying from Athens to Vilnius, on May 23, urgently landed at the Minsk airport due to a message about mining. Both Athens and Vilnius asked to take the plane, and the commander of the plane decided to turn around to Minsk. This plane was flown by Roman Protasevich, the founder of the Telegram channel Nexta, which is recognized as an extremist in Belarus. When checking documents at the Minsk airport, Protasevich was detained. A criminal case was opened against him under several articles, including the article “organization of mass riots”. He could face up to 15 years in prison.
