Taxpayers who are eligible for tax refunds can file their returns now to get a tax refund as soon as possible.

Following President Donald Trump’s emergency Declaration and in accordance with the Stafford Act, the Treasury Department and the IRS moved the end date of the tax period – the last day for filing tax returns and paying all Federal income taxes – from April 15 to July 15, 2020. This is stated in a statement from the US Treasury Department.

“At the direction of President Trump, we are moving the last day of Federal tax payments from April 15 to July 15,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “All taxpayers and businesses will have additional time to file returns and make payments without interest and penalties. I encourage all taxpayers who may receive a tax refund to apply for these funds as soon as possible.”

Taxpayers are not required to provide any documents to take advantage of this delay. Due to the extension of the tax filing date, no penalties will be applied to them.

This benefit applies only to Federal income taxes (including self-employment income taxes), and does not apply to state taxes or other types of Federal taxes.
