The NASA spacecraft collected soil samples from the asteroid’s surface

They are expected to be delivered to Earth in three years.

After nearly two years of orbiting the near-earth asteroid Bennu, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft successfully landed on it. They used a robotic arm to collect soil samples from the surface.

They will be delivered to Earth in 2023.

For this historic event, a van-sized NASA spacecraft briefly touched down on the surface of a landing site called Nightingale, which is as wide as several parking spaces.

The mass of collected samples can range from 50 grams to 2 kilograms. After that, the device took off again and went to a safe distance.

Based on the data sent to Earth, everything went perfectly, said Dante Lauretta, the mission’s principal investigator and a Professor at The lunar and planetary science laboratory at the University of Arizona. He said he feels “extraordinary,” and his team is “full of excitement” after receiving the data.
