In 2020, about 811 million people faced hunger in the world – this is 161 million more than a year earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in his video message to the participants of the meeting dedicated to the preparation for the summit on food systems.

“Up to 811 million people faced hunger in 2020 – this is 161 million more than in 2019,” Guterres said.

According to him, this happened not least because of the failures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic that still affects us has highlighted the link between inequality, poverty, food, disease, and our planet,” the Secretary-General added.
