More than 5,000 Ukrainians were detained while trying to enter the United States in March, most of them at the border with Mexico. This was reported on Tuesday by The Washington Post, citing data from the customs and border control service.

According to the newspaper, in February 272 Ukrainians tried to enter the United States through the border with Mexico, while in March there were more than 3,200 of them. At the same time, the number of Ukrainians who received permission to enter the United States under the usual refugee admission program has fallen sharply – from 427 to 12. In total, 1,150 Ukrainians tried to enter the United States in February.

According to the newspaper, “many, if not most” of the detainees at the border were granted permission to temporarily stay in the United States.

According to the newspaper, in total, in March, the U.S. Customs and Border Control Service detained more than 220 thousand people at the border with Mexico, which was the highest figure since 2000.

According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, from February 24 to April 18, the number of people who left Ukraine reached 4,980,589.
