Actor hit comedian Chris Rock in live.

Los Angeles (California) police officers were ready to immediately detain actor Will Smith for assault, who hit comedian Chris Rock in the face at the Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday. This was stated by the producer of the awards ceremony of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts William Packer in an interview with ABC.

“They said it was assault, that’s the word they used at the time,” Packer said. The police, he said, expressed readiness to “immediately detain” Smith. The actor hit Rock in the face on the air and spoke obscenely to him, thus reacting to an unsuccessful joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. A few minutes after the incident, he was awarded a statuette for the best male role – in the film “King Richard.”

“You can press charges and we will detain him. They offered this option,” continued Packer, who this year was the main producer of the Oscar ceremony at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.

Chris Rock, who participated in the conversation with law enforcement officers, insisted on not giving the case a go. According to Packer, the comedian categorically rejected the offer of the police to press charges against Smith.

“The police asked him directly if they should intervene, and he said no,” the producer claims. Rock still did not bring charges against Smith, and at a concert in Boston (Massachusetts) on Wednesday, he said that he was “still making sense” of what had happened.

Smith had previously publicly apologized to the comedian. The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts, in turn, began disciplinary proceedings against the actor. A meeting of the Academy’s board of governors is scheduled for April 18, following which sanctions may be applied to Smith.
