The Pentagon does not plan to extend the stay of the US National Guard in the Capitol after May 23

Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby said that there are 2,149 National Guard soldiers in the District of Columbia.

The US Department of Defense has not received requests for an extension after May 23 of the deadline for the deployment of National Guard soldiers on the territory of the Congress to ensure its security. Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby announced this at a regular briefing for journalists.

“To date, there are 2,149 National Guard soldiers in the [metropolitan] district of Columbia performing this task [to ensure security in Congress]. It is expected that this operation will be completed on Sunday, May 23. And we have not received any requests for its extension,” Kirby said.

In March, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin extended the deadline for military personnel to be deployed to the legislature until May 23, after receiving a request from the Capitol police. At the same time, about 5.2 thousand National Guard soldiers were previously involved to ensure security. Supporters of the 45th president of the Republican Donald Trump, who gathered on January 6 in Washington for a demonstration in support of him, broke into the US Congress, trying to prevent the approval of the results of the presidential election held in the country on November 3, which was won by Democrat Joe Biden. After these events, metal fences were installed around the perimeter of the complex, and US National Guard soldiers guarded the territory.
