Scientists from Massachusetts and Harvard Medical Schools (USA) have warned about the dangerous consequences of a prolonged coronavirus disease that children and adolescents may face. The study is described in a press release on the Healio portal.

Among the signs of a long-term course of infection are high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, heart failure, severe headaches, and rapid fatigue. Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are less common among children, but they cannot be completely excluded, according to doctors.

In addition, two to four weeks after infection, there is a risk of developing multisystem inflammation syndrome (MIS-C), which provokes damage to the cardiovascular system and the coronary artery. To find out its causes, scientists conducted an experiment in which 100 children participated. It turned out that in patients with MIS-C, the virus continued to be detected in the intestines.

The fact is that SARS-CoV-2 particles found in the gastrointestinal tract enter the bloodstream, which is why the body gives an immune response characteristic of MIS-C. According to Lael Yonker, a leading pulmonologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital, this is the first study to show that MIS-C virus particles in the blood coincide with a hyperinflammatory reaction.
