The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Facebook, accusing the company of eliminating competitors and monopolizing the advertising market in social networks.

“Facebook’s dominant position gives the company staggering revenues… Last year alone, its revenue exceeded $ 85 billion, income exceeded $ 29 billion,” the statement of claim filed in the Washington District Court says.

According to the commission, “the company mainly monetizes the monopoly of the social network by selling advertising based on (computer) surveillance of users.” Facebook, the authors of the claim, are sure, has been “buying up” companies that could potentially become its competitors for the past 10 years, thereby creating a market in which it is the only player of this scale.

The authorities are asking the court to find the social network guilty of violating the antimonopoly legislation and force it to abandon such actions in the future.
