The leadership of the Film Academy explained that the ban applies, including at the Academy Awards ceremony.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the USA has banned actor Will Smith from attending events organized by her for the next 10 years. This is stated in a statement issued on Friday following a meeting of the Board of governors of the Film Academy.
“The 94th Academy Awards Ceremony was supposed to be a celebration for many members of our community who have done an amazing job over the past year, but these moments were overshadowed by unacceptable and harmful behavior on stage by Smith,” the document states. Representatives of the film Academy apologized for the fact that “during the ceremony they reacted inadequately” to an “unexpected and unprecedented” act on the part of the actor.
“The board of governors met today to work out the most appropriate measures in response to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, along with accepting his statement of withdrawal [from the academy],” the statement said. “It was decided that for 10 years, starting from April 8, 2022, Smith will be prohibited from attending personally or virtually any events or programs organized by the academy,” the academy’s management noted, explaining that the ban applies, including at the Academy Awards ceremony.
In early April, Smith voluntarily resigned from the film Academy. Earlier, he apologized to comedian Chris Rock, who suffered from his actions.
