The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is planning a diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Games, which will be held in February next year in Beijing. This was reported on Tuesday by The Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin, citing sources.
According to them, none of the representatives of the American authorities will attend the competition. According to the publication, the final decision has not yet been made, but the head of state has received relevant recommendations with which he intends to agree. Biden’s approval is expected before the end of this month.
The Washington Post clarifies that such a measure will be a response to human rights violations that the United States attributes to China.
Earlier, CNBC claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping could invite Biden to the Winter Olympics during their conversation in an online format, which took place on Tuesday. The Chinese Foreign Ministry declined to comment on media publications on this topic. A representative of the American administration at a briefing after the summit said that the leaders of the two countries did not discuss the upcoming Olympics.
The XXIV Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from February 4 to 20, 2022.
