The US has invited Brazil to become a global partner of NATO

One of the conditions for such support from Washington, the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo reports, is a ban on the access of Chinese telecommunications companies to the national 5G mobile communication networks.

The US authorities have offered Brazil support in obtaining the status of a global partner of NATO. This was reported by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo with reference to sources in the Ministry of Defense of the South American Republic.

As the publication clarifies, the proposal was transmitted during a meeting held on Thursday in Brasilia, the assistant to the US President for National Security, Jake Sullivan, with the head of the Ministry of Defense, Walter Souza Braga Netto. One of the conditions for such support from Washington, the newspaper reports, is the ban on the access of Chinese telecommunications companies to the national mobile networks of the fifth generation (5G) in Brazil. According to Folha de S.Paulo, there is no consensus among the Brazilian military on this issue: the head of the Cabinet of Institutional (state) Security of the Administration of the President of Brazil, Augusto Elena, and his subordinates support the ban, while the troops themselves say that they have “never encountered problems” during the entire time of using the equipment of the Chinese Huawei.

Getting Brasilia the status of a global partner of NATO will allow the Brazilian military to purchase weapons from the alliance countries on more favorable terms and participate in army training programs. In addition, countries with such a status, in the event of a military conflict, can be invited to participate in it on the side of NATO but have the right to refuse, the publication explains. At the moment, the members of the global partnership of the military alliance are Australia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Colombia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea, and Japan, the newspaper reminds.
