The United States plans to launch a sanctions campaign to prevent Iran from developing and producing uncrewed aerial vehicles and guided missiles. It sees this as a threat to itself and its allies. This was reported on Thursday by The Wall Street Journal.
As noted in the publication, representatives of Western intelligence services see Iran’s plans to develop the remotely controlled weapons sector as “a more immediate danger to stability in the Middle East” than in programs for uranium enrichment and the creation of ballistic missiles. “This is part of a comprehensive approach since we are dealing with all aspects of the Iranian threat,” the publication quotes a senior American official as saying.
It is also noted that the United States has imposed sanctions on some of Iran’s missile programs over the past years. Still, officials believe that focusing on Iranian suppliers of components used to create uncrewed aerial vehicles and precision-guided missiles may become a more effective way to prevent these activities. Senior US military officials and diplomats say that Iran is increasingly using guided missiles and drones against US forces and their allies.
Iran’s representatives to the UN in New York did not respond to the publication’s request for comment.
