This was stated by Secretary of State Antony Blinken in a telephone conversation with his Egyptian counterpart.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern to the United States about the possible purchase of Russian Su-35 fighter jets by Egypt, the State Department said.
Blinken said this in a telephone conversation with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
“The Secretary of State and the Foreign Secretary stressed the importance of a strong strategic partnership between the United States and Egypt, especially in the area of security and continued cooperation in the fight against terrorism, and exchanged views on regional issues,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said.
“The Secretary of State expressed concern about human rights, which he stressed would be central to US-Egyptian bilateral relations, as well as Egypt’s potential purchase of Su-35 fighter jets from Russia,” Price added.
Blinken and Shoukry also discussed support for the UN-sponsored peace talks in Libya, the Middle East peace process, and cooperation in the fight against terrorism in the Sinai Peninsula, Price said.
