The US is investigating possible interference of Ukrainian officials in the 2020 elections

According to the publication, following the results of the proceedings, the American side can seek the extradition of the Ukrainians.

The federal prosecutor’s office in New York is investigating to find out whether former and current Ukrainian officials tried to influence the elections held in the United States in 2020. This was reported by The New York Times.

According to the sources of the publication, investigators are trying to determine “whether several Ukrainian officials helped develop a large-scale plan to interfere in the 2020 presidential campaign, including by using Rudolph Giuliani to spread deliberately false statements about President [US Joe] Biden, and give an advantage in the election to Donald Trump.”

In the November presidential election, Biden was the Democratic nominee, while Trump was the Republican nominee. Biden won. Giuliani was Trump’s personal lawyer for several years and played a key role in trying to challenge the outcome of last year’s presidential election.

The investigation was launched during the last few months of Trump’s tenure as president of the United States. The prosecutor’s office admits that criminal charges may be brought as a result of the proceedings. The US FBI is involved in the investigation.

The US authorities, in particular, conducted checks regarding Giuliani’s trip to European countries in December 2019. There he met with several Ukrainians, including the deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Andrey Derkach, who is also a person involved in the investigation. Giuliani allegedly tried to collect incriminating materials related to Biden during the trip, the newspaper notes. Representatives of the Federal Prosecutor’s office in New York state declined to comment on The New York Times ‘ allegations. The publication admits that following the results of the proceedings, the American side may seek the extradition of the Ukrainians.
