White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that despite this, American athletes will take part in them.

The United States has decided to arrange a diplomatic boycott of the upcoming Olympic Games in China. This was announced on Monday at a regular briefing by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

“The administration of [U.S. President Joe] Biden will not send any diplomatic or official representatives to the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in Beijing,” the official representative of the U.S. president said. At the same time, she clarified that the decision of the United States government does not apply to athletes who will be able to go to the competitions in Beijing. “The athletes from the USA team have our full support. We will support them 100%, we will cheer for them from home,” Psaki said.

She confirmed that Washington has already notified allies and partners abroad of the decision. The United States now leaves it to the allies to make their own decisions regarding participation or non-participation in events in China on the occasion of the Olympics, Psaki assured. “We informed them of our decision. And, of course, we give them the right to make decisions themselves,” the White House spokeswoman said.
