US President Donald Trump said that to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Americans are recommended to wear non-medical masks voluntarily.
Trump added that he won’t do it: “You can do it, but you don’t have to do it.” The US President recalled that the Centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) does not recommend the wearing of masks for people who are not constantly in contact with those infected with the coronavirus.
Trump also stressed that this decision is not intended to abolish the rule of social distance.
Previously, many US officials have urged Americans not to use masks for two main reasons: first, to avoid giving people a false sense of security, and second, to avoid creating a shortage of masks that are vital for medics and rescuers.
After that, health Minister Alex Azar issued a statement, which, in particular, states: “Evidence of the pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic spread of coronavirus, as well as evidence of widespread transmission of the virus in the country, led the Centers for disease control and prevention to issue a new recommendation: in addition to the existing social distance, all Americans are required to cover their face, for example, to wear a cloth mask when leaving home to go to the grocery store. ( … ) We have no evidence that wearing a cloth mask can prevent infection with the virus, but science has found that it will help reduce the likelihood of infecting other people, it is a key condition for protecting the most vulnerable, slowing the spread of the virus and saving lives.”
President Trump also said that it is the right of governors to decide whether residents of their States will comply with the lockdown regime.
