US President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Theresa may, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other world leaders gathered in Portsmouth on Wednesday for a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of the allied landings in Normandy.
The event included musical performances and reading of historical documents. So, Trump read a prayer with which President Franklin Roosevelt spoke on the radio after the operation began in 1944.
The press service of Theresa May published a statement, which notes the “historical international cooperation” in the framework of the operation of the allies against Nazi Germany.
“Coming together to honor those whose bravery and sacrifice on the Normandy coast marked a turning point in world war II, we promise never forget our duty to them, – May said. – Their solidarity and determination to defend our freedom continue to be a lesson for all of us.”
The events were attended by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain, who together with Trump met with veterans who participated in the operation.
Trump on Wednesday also met with the US military. Later that day, the President arrived in Ireland. This is his first visit to this country as President. Currently, Trump is meeting with Prime Minister of Ireland Leo Varadkar
