U.S. Deputy Secretary of State met with the new ambassador of China

The meeting was held against the background of tension in bilateral relations on some issues.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman met with the new Chinese ambassador to the United States, Qin Gang, in Washington.

“The Deputy Secretary of State touched upon the issues that were discussed during her meetings with officials of the People’s Republic of China in Tianjin last month and expressed the commitment of the United States to continue discussions,” the State Department said in a press release.

Before he was appointed Ambassador, Qin Gang was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and was responsible for relations with Europe.

He also served twice as an official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Qin Gang was replaced as ambassador by Cui Tiankai, who worked in the United States for eight years and longest-held this position.
