A high-ranking representative of the Washington administration expressed the opinion that there will be many cases of hospitalization due to the new strain.

Omicron-a strain of coronavirus will lead to a new “big wave” of morbidity in the United States. This point of view was expressed to the Axios portal by a high-ranking representative of the Washington administration.

“Everything points to a big wave. A big wave is coming,” said the official, whose words are quoted in a material published on the portal on Tuesday.

“It will be quick. It will not be so serious, but, unfortunately, there will be many cases of hospitalization,” the representative of the administration added.

On November 26, the World Health Organization designated the strain of coronavirus B.1.1.529, found in southern Africa, with the Greek letter Omicron. The WHO statement said that this variety “has a large number of mutations, a number of which are of concern.” The global epicenter of the spread of the omicron strain is the south of Africa. The largest number of people infected with it was detected in South Africa. The new strain has been detected in more than 60 countries, including the Russian Federation and the USA.
