The coronavirus pandemic will end early next year. The head made this forecast of the Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge.
“The worst-case scenario is over. We know more about the virus compared to 2020, when it just began to spread,” the Danish TV channel DR quoted the official as saying.
Kluge emphasized that the virus will not disappear from the human population, but by the indicated date there will be no need for restrictions. At the same time, he noted that this is only a forecast since so far no one can say for sure how the situation will develop.
In mid-February, WHO spokeswoman, Melita Vujnovic, said that the third wave of coronavirus is possible if people are “not careful.” She stressed that it would be possible to speak of the end of the pandemic when the number of cases in all world regions is below the epidemiological threshold. The burden on health care due to coronavirus will not interfere with its normal operation.
The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in turn, urged not to postpone vaccination since due to mutations and the emergence of new strains, existing vaccines may be useless.
More than 111 million people are infected with coronavirus in the world. Almost 2.5 million have died. The most infected and victims are in the USA, India and Brazil.
