American actor Will Smith voluntarily resigned from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after hitting comedian Chris Rock in the face during the Academy Awards ceremony. The artist’s statement is cited by Variety magazine.
“I didn’t live up to the academy’s trust,” Smith admitted. “I am resigning from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and am ready to face any punishment that the board of Governors deems appropriate.”
Earlier, the film Academy began disciplinary proceedings against Smith because of the incident at the Academy Awards ceremony. According to CNN, a meeting of the Academy’s board of governors is scheduled for April 18, at which measures can be taken against the artist. In particular, it was reported that his membership in the film academy could be suspended or canceled, as well as other sanctions applied.
“My act at the 94th Academy Awards Ceremony was shocking, painful and unforgivable. The list of those I have harmed is long, and includes Chris, his family, many of my friends and family, everyone in the audience and viewers around the world,” Smith stressed. “Changes take time, and I am ready to do the work to never let violence get the better of reason again,” the artist concluded.
