The President of Ukraine called on the UN Security Council to provide Ukrainians with security guarantees enshrined in the Charter of the organization.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy addressed the participants of the UN Security Council meeting via video link. The meeting considered Ukraine’s accusation against the Russian military of killing civilians by soldiers in Bucha, a city located northwest of Kyiv.
Zelenskiy began his speech with a brief story about how the day before he visited Bucha, liberated from Russian troops.
“There is no such war crime that the Russians would not commit in Bucha,” the President of Ukraine said. – They found and deliberately killed anyone who served our country; they killed women right next to their homes; they killed entire families, with adults and children, and tried to burn their bodies. Someone was shot in the street, someone was thrown into wells so that they died in agony. Those who were sitting in a car in the middle of the street were crushed by running over them with a tank. People had their limbs cut off, their throats cut, and women were raped and killed in front of children. And it was done by [soldiers] of a member state of the UN Security Council.”
Earlier, Russia rejected these accusations of Kyiv, calling them “criminal provocations” and promising to provide the Security Council with “empirical evidence” that its military is not involved in atrocities.
Volodymyr Zelenskiy strongly called on the international community to help as soon as possible to stop the war crimes that are being committed on Ukrainian soil today.
“Where is the security guarantees that the UN should provide? Obviously, that… the UN is simply not able to act effectively,” the Ukrainian president said. – Bringing to justice for cruelty should be inevitable. The purpose of the Organization [the United Nations] is to maintain peace… However, the UN Charter is being violated right now, in Ukraine, as a result of Russia’s actions. We are seeing the most horrific war crimes since the Second World War.”
“It’s 2022 now. We have convincing evidence [of the crimes committed], including satellite images, and we can conduct a detailed investigation, giving the millionaires maximum access [to the materials], in maximum cooperation with international institutions, with the involvement of the International Criminal Court, in order to achieve the full truth and bring to full responsibility,” Zelenskiy said.
He again appealed to the Security Council to “punish once and for all” Russia, which believes that “everything is allowed to it”, “in order to demonstrate to all other potential war criminals in the world what awaits them.”
“Why did Russia invade Ukraine?” Zelenskiy asked the question and explained:
“Because Russian leaders feel like colonialists of ancient times: they want to seize our wealth, our people. They have already deported hundreds of thousands of our people to their country. They have abducted more than two thousand children and continue to do so. Russia wants to turn Ukrainians into silent slaves. The Russian army is openly looting in the Ukrainian towns and villages they have captured.”
“We are dealing with a member of the UN Security Council who is trying to turn his right of veto [in the Security Council] into the right to death. This undermines the entire system of global security, allowing criminals to remain unpunished. If this continues, the countries of the world will rely only on their weapons for security issues, and not on international laws. [In this case] the UN can simply be closed,” the President of Ukraine said.
