The President of Ukraine made a televised address.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky made a statement after a meeting of the National Defense Council and communication with the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, France and Germany.
“Ukraine unequivocally qualifies the recent actions of the Russian Federation as a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state. All responsibility for the consequences, in connection with these decisions, rests with the political leadership of Russia,” Volodymyr Zelensky said. “Recognition of the independence of the occupied areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions may mean Russia’s unilateral withdrawal from the Minsk agreements and ignoring decisions within the Normandy Group.”
According to the leader of Ukraine, Russia’s recognition of the DPR and LPR undermines peace efforts and destroys existing negotiation formats.
“With today’s and tomorrow’s possible solutions, Russia will legalize its troops, who have actually been in the occupied areas of Donbass since 2014. A country that has been supporting the war for eight years cannot maintain peace, as it claims,” the Ukrainian leader stressed.
Volodymyr Zelensky added that he had discussed the situation with the leaders of the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, the President of the European Council, and also plans to discuss the current situation with the President of Turkey.
“We are committed to a political and diplomatic settlement and do not succumb to provocations,” Volodymyr Zelensky said.
He added that Ukraine, according to Article 51 of the UN Charter, reserves the right to individual and collective self-defense.
